Today was the semi-annual gaming (et al.) convention at school. As is my custom, I ran Kobolds Ate My Baby!
Despite having several new players every time I run the game, we always have a blast. Today was no exception.
I stole plot elements from Rudolph claymation specials, Kingdom of Loathing, and Robo Rally. The gist of the game was that the old year (personified) had kidnapped Baby New Year to keep the calendar from switching over. He had also imprisoned Santa Claus to keep the fat guy from interfering with his plot. The kobolds have to free Santa to help get the baby. (Santa doesn’t know they’re going to eat it.)
The elves are helping the old year because of Santa’s oppressive employment tactics. So the kobolds have to make their way past a barricade, and then through a factory. Finally, they get to rescue Santa who is imprisoned in a ginger bread house and guarded by a Bumble (the abominable snowman from Rudolph).
I’m leaving out details (many fun details… also, very dangerous). But it was a blast. It’s maybe the first Kobolds game I’ve run where the players almost worked together. Almost. Until the end, where it devolved into attacking one another and stealing the baby. But I’m pretty sure much fun was had by all.
And I forgot about my back pain for a few hours. So I consider it a great success. If anyone wants the details about the adventure (because you’re looking to run Kobolds sometime), let me know. I’m planning on typing it up at some point.
