John McCain, apparently in an attempt to convince right-wing that he’s one of them seems to have taken a “no new taxes” pledge of sorts on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”
McCain Says Bernanke Should Have Reduced Interest Rates Faster:
“No new taxes,” McCain said. “I could see an argument, if our economy continues to deteriorate, for lower interest rates, lower tax rates, and certainly decreasing corporate tax rates, which are the second-highest in the world.”
Of course, as McCain realizes, this will lead to even higher deficits unless he controls spending. And he covers that by pledging to curtain earmarks.
The reality is, though, that he’s going to have a tough time doing that. If a Republican Congress, under a Republican President, didn’t cut earmarks, why should we believe McCain can keep them under control.
But the real problem, of course, isn’t Congress’ earmarks. The real problem is the billions of dollars in special requests, from the President, for funding the war in Iraq. Young men and women in our nation’s military sacrifice their lives because our President says so. What does the nation sacrifice to pay for it? Nothing. We cut taxes while increasing spending.
What does McCain promise?
Well, directly addressing the question of a pullout from Iraq:
“I still say setting a date for withdrawal is chaos, genocide, and we’ll be back, because al-Qaeda will then succeed.”
So McCain intends to continue the incoherent policy of cutting taxes and spending billions upon billions on an immoral war. How is that going to help?
John, the “Straight-Talk Express” has left the station, and you forgot to get back on it. We don’t need four more years of a Bush-clone. Get your economic policy together, quit pandering to the right, and figure out how to pay for all of this war you want us to continue. Or drop it like it should have been dropped five years ago. If this is all you have to offer us, it won’t be hard to vote for someone else come November.

If we don’t win - chose your victory condition from the menu - Al-Qaeda does? That’s the _classic_ formulation of how a regular force loses an insurgency. It’s hard to believe he was ever a military man.
See Mr. Straight-Talk’s finagling of his loan? If he was losing the primary it required him to stay in and accept matching funds so he could pay it off. Otherwise, he keeps his hands clean… If I may paraphrase: “I won’t accept dirty government money so long as I don’t need it… in which case I’ve obligated myself to do so.” Admirably Machiavellian. “Straight-Talkish”? Not so much.
I used to like this guy. Used to.
