I was elected as an alternate delegate to the state DFL (Democrat-Farmer-Labor party, for those not familiar with Minnesota politics) convention. The primary business of the state convention will be to nominate the DFL candidate for U.S. Senate to run against Republican incumbent Norm Coleman.

Over the weekend, I got a voice mail that I hadn’t noticed until today. It was from Al Franken who is seeking the nomination.

Not a recording of Al Franken. Not a campaign worker. It was from Al Franken himself. He joked about my name (mentioned that my first name was his father’s first name), apologized that I was selected as an alternate (a real mess at the county convention, where the Franken campaign worker meddled a bit too much), and gave me his office number if I wanted to call him before the convention. It was a friendly, informal voice mail. Too bad I didn’t hear my phone ring.

I’m sure he wanted to solidify my support at the convention. Because of some personal issues, I’m not sure I’ll make it to the convention after all. Which I feel badly about. We’ll see, though.

Still, it’s odd to find a voice mail from Al Franken on my phone.

Hi, JB, I hope your personal issues get resolved and you are able to make it, at least for Saturday. My own candidate is Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, who is the best candidate I have found in 40 years. There will be a longish Q&A on Saturday morning, as well as candidate speeches and a shorter Q&A on Saturday afternoon. I feel fairly certain that you will convert to being a Jack supporter if you are able to catch those sessions. JNP is truly amazing on the issues: eloquent, honest, courageous. Even if you miss the convention, please make it a point to check Jack out by streaming him, particularly if Jack is the one who gets the endorsement. You will probably be able to get the speeches through MPR or through Jack’s website at http://www.jackforsenate.org

  2. Which Al Franken was it? As far as I know there are at least 3 fitting the details you happened to mention.

    Was it the tall one?
