This morning’s news contained a disturbing development…
Musharraf imposes emergency rule:
Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf has declared emergency rule and suspended the country’s constitution.
I wish this surprised me more. Even though the Bush administration has criticized Musharraf’s action, this is a case of reaping what we sow.
In our attempts to go after the perpetrators of 9/11, we decided to go further. We declared a war on terror. We decided to overthrow the Taliban. And we decided to go into Iraq before we had stabilized Afghanistan. During this time, we have accepted, explicitly, India’s nuclear program. And, by allying ourselves with Pakistan, we ignore both their undemocratic government and their nuclear program.
Musharraf knows that we cannot afford to alienate Pakistan. So we can complain publicly about his move, but we cannot do anything about it. Bush has, in his eagerness for war and desperation for allies, painted us into a corner. We must accept Musharraf’s continued hold on power, despite his tyrannical grip on it.
One more way that Bush’s war on terror keeps giving and giving…

I’m guessing that the Bush administration’s criticism is more about M. making an explicit announcement than anything else: The Bush way is to steadily, stealthily (relatively speaking), and not all that slowly co-opt more and more power for the Executive.
Snark.
