I dislike Karl Rove. He epitomizes dirty politics and partisan division. I’m glad he’s gone. And I do suspect he had a dirty hand in the Valerie Plame scandal, but I can’t prove it. I’m just glad he’s gone.

But this morning, I woke up to the best news I can imagine (shy of impeachment or resignation of Bush and/or Cheney or immediate withdrawal from Iraq). Better than Rove’s resignation. As I’m sure many (if not all) of you have heard, Alberto Gonzales is resigning as Attorney General.

As I’ve said before, Gonzales is problematic for reasons beyond the firing of the U.S. attorneys. He has supported the use of torture. He has supported spying on American citizens without warrants. He was either culpable or negligent in the political firings of the U.S. attorneys. He seems to regularly perjure himself in front of Congress. I can barely imagine a less fit person for the job of Attorney General.

I’m glad he’s gone. I just wish it hadn’t taken as long as it has. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

UPDATE:

From Bush’s statement this morning on Gonzales’ resignation:

Bush said the attorney general’s ‘good name was dragged through the mud for political reasons.’1

If I understand Bush correctly, then, we can safely say ‘what comes around, goes around.’ Gonzales dragged the names of several U.S. Attorneys through the mud for political reasons, and now he’s suffered the same fate.

Now if Gonzales had his phones tapped without a warrant and was subject to torture, karma would be satisfied. But even after all the damage he has done to this country’s laws, I don’t think he deserves those fates.
